In 1938 Paul Arthur Schilpp, of Northwestern University, established the Library of Living Philosophers series which published volumes containing individual philosophers' autobiographical notes and essays, followed by criticisms and the authors' responses to the critiques. In 1965, Shilpp accepted the position of Distinguished Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The university took over full responsibility for the Library of Living Philosophers in 1979. This collection, which complements Manuscript Collection 20, contains photos of Schilpp and various philosophers associated with the project, including Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein.

Dr. Paul Arthur Schilpp was born in Germany. He came to the U.S. in 1916 at the age of 16 to study at Baldwin Wallace College. He went on to earn degrees from Northwestern University, Garrett Theological Seminary and Stanford University.
